Using Software to Stay Ahead of the Compliance Curve

March 23, 2017/in Blog, General Compliance

Making compliance an integral part of your healthcare organization can seem daunting amidst sophisticated healthcare laws. Luckily software applications have come a long way. Incorporating the right software tools into your compliance strategy will help your organization stay ahead of the curve when it comes to ensuring compliance.

For instance, using the right software tools can streamline the process for tracking background checks, training programs, employee information, audits and risk assessments for your organization:

Ongoing Monthly LEIE Checks

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) maintains the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) which is updated monthly and provides details about persons and entities excluded from participating in Federal health care programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP.

Searching this database is a necessity because healthcare providers who hire an individual or entity listed on the LEIE may be subject to civil monetary penalties. These screenings should be done for vendors and current and potential employees on a monthly basis. And documentation of all searches should be maintained in case of an audit or investigation.

Manually searching the LEIE on such a routine basis is extremely time-consuming. But software allows automation of the task, while avoiding mistakes and minimizing liability for the organization.

Employee Training

An effective training program is crucial to cultivating a culture of compliance within your organization and is one of the seven critical elements of a compliance program. Compliance orientation training must be administered as part of the onboarding process followed by ongoing compliance training.

Utilizing a software solution that provides easily assignable compliance training to your workforce while maintaining these training records in one platform streamlines the entire education and management process.

Audits and Risk Assessments

Conducting auditing and monitoring provides insight regarding prioritization of tasks. Ongoing evaluation is critical to any compliance program and in healthcare there are several areas and types of auditing and monitoring to consider. Software makes it simple to track your audit history and to alert you of that next audit to keep compliance measures a top priority. The right software can also enable your organization to identify vulnerabilities and risk areas that need attention with comprehensive risk assessments based on healthcare regulations.

Employee Information

Streamline employee administration tasks by using software to track employee records in one centralized platform, such as TB screenings, flu and Hepatitis B vaccination status, as well as professional licenses and certifications.

First Healthcare Compliance’s cloud based software solution offers these tools plus more when it comes to meeting your healthcare compliance needs. Contact us today for a quick demonstration of our compliance management software solution.
